The number of Indians suffering from mental health problem was larger than the entire population of Japan<\/em> \u201c\u2013 he (president of India) said. <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/news\/politics-and-nation\/india-facing-possible-mental-health-epidemic-warns-president\/articleshow\/62308115.cms\">Economic Times<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Manas means mind.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"66\" data-end=\"102\">Understanding Mental Disorders &#8211; Global Scenario in brief<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"104\" data-end=\"317\">A mental disorder is a clinically significant disturbance in an individual\u2019s cognition, emotional regulation, or behavior. This overview focuses on <strong data-start=\"1059\" data-end=\"1079\">mental disorders<\/strong> as classified by the <strong data-start=\"1101\" data-end=\"1183\">World Health Organization\u2019s International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In <strong data-start=\"1222\" data-end=\"1230\">2019<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1232\" data-end=\"1254\">970 million people<\/strong>\u2014or <strong data-start=\"1258\" data-end=\"1289\">1 in 8 individuals globally<\/strong>\u2014were living with a mental disorder, with <strong data-start=\"1331\" data-end=\"1367\">anxiety and depressive disorders<\/strong> being the most common\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/mental-disorders\">[WHO]<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/vizhub.healthdata.org\/gbd-results\/\">[GBD]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <strong data-start=\"1407\" data-end=\"1428\">COVID-19 pandemic<\/strong> in 2020 further intensified the mental health crisis, leading to a sharp increase in these conditions. Early estimates indicate a <strong data-start=\"1559\" data-end=\"1592\">26% rise in anxiety disorders<\/strong> and a <strong data-start=\"1599\" data-end=\"1645\">28% increase in major depressive disorders<\/strong> within just one year\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/i\/item\/WHO-2019-nCoV-Sci_Brief-Mental_health-2022.1\">[WHO]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Addressing mental health challenges requires <strong data-start=\"1722\" data-end=\"1802\">greater awareness, early intervention, and improved access to effective care<\/strong> to support those affected worldwide.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex max-w-full flex-col flex-grow\">\n<div class=\"min-h-8 text-message relative flex w-full flex-col items-end gap-2 whitespace-normal break-words text-start [.text-message+&amp;]:mt-5\" dir=\"auto\" data-message-author-role=\"assistant\" data-message-id=\"7d2cf171-fc42-4268-9a84-de930d573475\" data-message-model-slug=\"gpt-4o\">\n<div class=\"flex w-full flex-col gap-1 empty:hidden first:pt-[3px]\">\n<div class=\"markdown prose w-full break-words dark:prose-invert light\">\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"210\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Although effective prevention and treatment options are available, most individuals with mental disorders lack access to proper care. Types of following mental illness are treatable, the question is when and how a patient identifies his or her problems. A brief list of such ailments:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Anxiety Disorder:<\/strong> In 2019, an estimated 301 million people, including 58 million children and adolescents, were affected by anxiety disorders. These conditions are defined by excessive fear, persistent worry, and related behavioral disturbances.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/mental-disorders\">[WHO]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Depression &#8211; <\/strong>In 2019, approximately 280 million people, including 23 million children and adolescents, were affected by depression. Unlike normal mood variations and brief emotional responses to daily challenges, depression is a persistent and serious mental health condition\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/mental-disorders\">[WHO]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bipolar Disorder &#8211; <\/strong>In 2019, approximately 40 million people were living with bipolar disorder, a condition marked by alternating depressive episodes and periods of manic symptoms. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/mental-disorders\">[WHO]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Post Traumatic Stress Disorder &#8211;\u00a0 <\/strong>Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is particularly common in conflict-affected settings. It can arise following exposure to highly threatening or traumatic events, either as a single occurrence or a series of distressing experiences.. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/mental-disorders\">[WHO]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Schizophrenia<\/strong> &#8211; Schizophrenia affects around 24 million people worldwide, or approximately 1 in 300 individuals. People with this condition have a life expectancy that is 10 to 20 years shorter than the general population. It is characterized by significant disruptions in perception and behavior, with symptoms including persistent delusions, hallucinations, and disorganized thinking. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/mental-disorders\">[WHO]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Eating Disorder<\/strong> &#8211; In 2019, approximately 14 million people, including nearly 3 million children and adolescents, were affected by eating disorders. Conditions such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are characterized by disordered eating patterns, an intense focus on food, and concerns about body weight and shape <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/mental-disorders\">[WHO]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Neurodevelopmental disorders<\/strong> \u2013 These behavioral and cognitive disorders develop during the early stages of life and cause significant difficulties in acquiring and performing intellectual, motor, language, or social skills.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Need for introducing Tele-MANAS program \u2013 The Background<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Mental Health systems and social support<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There is a significant global disparity between the need for mental health treatment and its availability. Furthermore, when treatment is provided, its quality is often inadequate. For instance, only 29% of individuals with psychosis and just one-third of those with depression receive formal mental health care.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/i\/item\/9789240036703\">[Mental Health Atlas WHO]<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosmedicine\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pmed.1003901\">[PLOS BILOLOGY]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>People with mental disorders also require:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Social support encompasses assistance in building and sustaining personal, family, and social relationships.<\/li>\n<li>They also require support for educational programs, employment, housing, and engagement in other meaningful activities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>WHO responds.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>WHO\u2019s Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan 2013-2030 recognizes the essential role of mental health in achieving health for all people. The plan includes 4 major objectives:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To enhance strong leadership and governance in mental health.<\/li>\n<li>To deliver holistic, integrated, and responsive mental health and social care services within community-based settings.<\/li>\n<li>To execute strategies for promoting mental health and preventing disorders ; and<\/li>\n<li>To enhance information systems, research, and evidence for mental health..<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is expected that the member states of WHO will follow the guidelines as set out by WHO.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Depression and anxiety disorders are widespread and debilitating conditions that not only cause significant human suffering and health loss but also lead to substantial economic impact.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>India, being a developing country has been bothered by the mental illness of its citizens since long, like other countries in the world. Mental illness, most of the times being suppressed due to social stigma and taboo, reduces the ability to work, in case of illness like Depressive disorder, stress disorder or even completely lost the work force in case of suicide.<\/p>\n<p>In case of Suicide, Financial burden on the society is enormous and India is no exception. The following statistics give an idea why Govt. of India is so much concern about mental illness of its citizens now:<\/p>\n<p>The aim of this study was to estimate the economic cost of suicide in India in 2015.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Materials and Methods:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The calculation of years of presumed life lost and total years of life lived (TYLL) was based on official 2015 data on suicides and life expectancy. Market rates and official estimates of various expenditures, both before and after suicide, were used to assess losses and gains. The total cost was derived from the difference between income and expenditure.<\/p>\n<p>Results:<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, a total of 133,623 individuals died by suicide.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They lost 4,349,158 years in total while living for slightly more period of 4,777,293 years.<\/li>\n<li>Post suicide, the expenses were 152,233.8 trillion with a saving of 29,200 trillion. Throughout their lifetimes, these individuals generated an income of 1,672,198 trillion and incurred costs amounting to 320,739.3 trillion.<\/li>\n<li>The net cost of suicide was \u2018 149,313.9 trillion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Although suicide cannot be fully prevented, effective, tailored prevention strategies can help minimize substantial financial losses.\u00a0 [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5968638\/\">Financial Aspects of Indian Suicide 2015<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Acknowledging the mental health crisis, Govt. of India announced to establish a new milestone on World Mental Health Day last year (in the Union Budget 2022 &#8211; 2023) 10<sup>th<\/sup> October 2022, Tele Mental Health Assistance and Networking across States, known as <strong>Tele MANAS<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the pressing need for a resilient digital mental health network, this initiative seeks to offer free, 24\/7 tele-mental health services nationwide, with a special focus on reaching individuals in remote and underserved areas.<\/p>\n<p>A toll-free, 24\/7 helpline number (14416 or <strong>1-800-891-441<\/strong><strong>6<\/strong>) is now available as part of the initiative.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Objectives of Introducing Tele-MANAS Program<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To make people aware that Mental illness is a Socio-Economic problem.<\/li>\n<li>To connect with people in remote areas online.<\/li>\n<li>To offer an anonymous platform to Indian citizens to overcome social stigma and taboos.<\/li>\n<li>To make people feel confident to open-up as, patient data will not be disclosed.<\/li>\n<li>To generate a database for citizens of India<\/li>\n<li>Through this initiative, a message is sent to Indian society about the seriousness of the subject.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>National Tele-Manas Health Program<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Land Area of India \u2013 32,87,263 sq. km,<\/p>\n<p>No. of Federal States \u2013 28 states and 8 Union Territories (UT)<\/p>\n<p>Population &#8211;\u00a0\u00a0 1.42 billion<\/p>\n<p>No. of recognised languages in India \u2013 22 <a href=\"https:\/\/rajbhasha.gov.in\/en\/languages-included-eighth-schedule-indian-constitution\">[Rajbhasha]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Unity in diversity is the key principle of India, upon which India, as a country, was formed.
